Temperatures Rise: Reduce the Risk of Heat Stroke

Jun 2, 2017 by Comfort Keepers of Fredericksburg

As summer begins to move in, the temperatures are inevitably beginning to warm up as well. With higher temperatures, your loved one is more susceptible to having a heat stroke, if precautions are not taken. A heat stroke is the most serious heat-related illness that occurs when the body becomes unable to control its temperature.

A heat stroke can lead to disabilities or death, so it is important to know signs of a heat stroke and learn ways to protect your aging loved one to reduce their risk of having one.

Signs of Heat Stroke

  • Extremely high body temperature, above 103°F
  • Red, hot, dry skin with no sweat
  • Rapid, strong pulse
  • Throbbing Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea

If your loved one is showing signs of a heat stroke, have someone call for immediate medical assistance and begin to cool your loved one off by following some of the protection tips listed below:

Protecting Your Loved One from Heat Stroke

  • Drink cool, nonalcoholic drinks
  • Take a cool shower or bath
  • Seek air-conditioned environment
  • Wear lightweight clothing
  • Sit in a shady area

If your loved one’s doctor limits the amounts of fluids they drink, or if they take water pills, have them discuss with their health care provider the amount of fluids they can safely drink when the weather is hot.
